The WNBA has announced that it could not confirm allegations of racist remarks made by fans during a recent game in Indianapolis between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever. The league’s investigation involved collecting input from fans, team staff, and arena personnel, along with reviewing audio and video recordings from the event.

Chicago Sky CEO and President Adam Fox expressed appreciation for the prompt response from the league and the Fever, emphasizing the WNBA’s commitment to combating hate at its games. “This process demonstrates the league’s strong stance on stopping hate at all WNBA games and events,” he stated.

The investigation followed claims that racist comments were directed at Chicago Sky player Angel Reese during a game where the Fever triumphed significantly with a score of 93-58. While Reese has not provided details on specific comments, Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, an opponent in the game, mentioned that the environment was quite loud, which might have contributed to a lack of clarity regarding the situation. Clark acknowledged that the investigation was warranted, even if she personally did not hear any inappropriate remarks.

Both teams and the WNBA Players Association have publicly supported the investigation, illustrating a united front against hate speech. Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines also expressed gratitude for the thorough investigation, reinforcing their commitment to creating a positive environment for players and fans alike.

Although Reese refrained from discussing specifics about the incident, she conveyed her appreciation for the support from the league and recognized the broader implications of such behavior. “If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone,” she remarked, reflecting on the importance of addressing these issues within the sport.

This development highlights the WNBA’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful atmosphere for all players and fans. By addressing allegations promptly and thoroughly, the league aims to reinforce its zero-tolerance stance against hate and discrimination in sports.
