WNBA Finals Kickoff: Aces and Mercury in Friday Night Showdown

The 2025 WNBA Finals are set to kick off on Friday night, featuring a clash of formidable legacies as the No. 2-seeded Las Vegas Aces take on the No. 4-seeded Phoenix Mercury. The highly anticipated Game 1 will begin at 8 p.m. ET at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Both franchises boast a rich history in the league, but their journeys to this championship series have unfolded in unexpected ways this season. The Aces, champions in two of the last three years, underwent significant roster changes following a semifinal exit last year. Despite struggling at times, a pivotal moment came after a staggering 53-point loss to the Minnesota Lynx on August 2, which sparked an impressive 16-game winning streak that propelled them into the postseason.

In the semifinals, the Aces faced a tough challenge from the Indiana Fever, ultimately securing their finals berth with a thrilling 107-98 overtime win in Game 5. A’Ja Wilson, who recently collected her record fourth MVP award, led her team with an outstanding performance, contributing 35 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

On the other hand, the Phoenix Mercury, historically a powerhouse with three WNBA championships, last tasted victory in 2014. Following the retirement of legendary guard Diana Taurasi and the departure of center Brittney Griner to Atlanta, the team has quietly restructured its lineup. A crucial element of their recent success was a multi-team trade that brought perennial All-Star Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun and Satou Sabally from the Dallas Wings. Despite a strong yet overlooked regular season, the Mercury have used the lack of recognition as fuel for their postseason push.

Alyssa Thomas confidently stated, “I’ve been saying since training camp that we were going to the finals. We don’t care about people’s opinions. We’ve stuck together all season. We’re going to go out there and play our basketball and fight every game.”

As Game 1 approaches, Las Vegas is currently favored by 3.5 points, with a total points over/under set at 160.5. WNBA analysts suggest that the Mercury’s advantage in rest—having last played Sunday—and their determined mindset may position them well against the Aces, who come off a grueling semifinal victory.

In addition to the finals matchup, Friday’s sports calendar also features various college football games and a look ahead to Saturday’s MLB playoff games, adding excitement for sports fans across the board.
