WKU Football aims to extend their winning streak as they prepare to host FIU on Tuesday night at Houchens-Smith Stadium. The Hilltoppers are coming off a successful road trip in Conference USA, having recently secured a victory against Delaware with a score of 27-24. This win marked an impressive 5-1 start for WKU, their best beginning to a season since 2015.
In the previous matchup, quarterback Maverick McIvor showcased his skills, throwing for 230 yards and one touchdown, while also contributing 36 rushing yards. With an undefeated record of 3-0 in conference play, the Hilltoppers currently lead Conference USA.
Conversely, the Panthers are looking to rebound from a tough loss to Connecticut, which ended 51-10, leaving them with a 2-3 overall record. WKU’s Head Coach Tyson Helton noted the challenge ahead, stating, “They’re a big, physical football team and we need to play very, very well. It will be great to be back home after being on the road for two consecutive games.”
The Panthers boast a standout senior running back, Kejon Owens, who has rushed for 463 yards and scored five touchdowns this season. Furthermore, junior quarterback Keyone Jenkins has thrown for 775 yards and two touchdowns, presenting a dual-threat challenge according to Defensive Coordinator Da’von Brown. “Their quarterback is an elite guy with his legs and throwing the ball. It’s going to be a big challenge,” he acknowledged.
Highlighting the excitement surrounding the event, a concert featuring country hip-hop artist Blanco Brown is slated to kick off at 5:30 p.m. on the South Lawn prior to the game. This matchup will also serve as the annual blackout game, with fans encouraged to wear black to show their support. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., promising an electric atmosphere and a critical game for both teams.
