Wiz Walks Away: What It Means for Tech Giants Like Microsoft

Wiz’s decision to withdraw from negotiations with Google regarding a $23 billion acquisition could have significant repercussions for the technology sector, particularly for Microsoft.

Wiz, an Israeli cybersecurity startup, opted to reject Google’s offer, as CEO Assaf Rappaport stated that he wanted to focus on growing the company towards generating $1 billion in annual revenue and pursuing an initial public offering. This acquisition would have enhanced Google’s cybersecurity capabilities, especially following a major service disruption caused by CrowdStrike, a key player in the industry.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives noted in a recent report that the failure of the deal stemmed from investor unease and ongoing antitrust challenges facing Google. The tech giant has experienced heightened scrutiny over its business practices and recently concluded a trial related to one of the Department of Justice’s significant cases.

Ives indicated that the collapse of the Wiz acquisition could create “ripple impacts” throughout the tech sector. Despite the setback, he believes Google will continue to invest in expanding its cybersecurity initiatives, a focus that Microsoft is likely to adopt as well.

According to Ives, the cybersecurity sector is in need of consolidation, and he anticipates that Microsoft will seek to enhance its cybersecurity offerings over the next 12 to 18 months. Microsoft recently faced scrutiny due to a widespread IT disruption linked to a failure in its cybersecurity software, provided by CrowdStrike, which affected users globally and disrupted various operations.

Although Ives acknowledges CrowdStrike as a leader in cybersecurity, the recent outage suggests that Microsoft may need to strengthen its cybersecurity measures further, and the breakdown of the Google-Wiz deal could provide an opportunity for that enhancement.
