Ra High School, the reigning champions of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL), is gearing up to defend its U19 title, inspired by their powerful motto, “With God, everything is possible.” The school, which gained prominence last year through a stunning underdog victory against historically dominant rugby teams, is eager to maintain its status at the pinnacle of high school rugby.
As the new season commences this weekend, team captain Penasio Waqa Tematema admits that they face considerable challenges ahead. Reflecting on their rigorous preparation, Tematema acknowledges the obstacles they’ve encountered, including limited resources and a demanding training regime that has nonetheless strengthened their resolve. “As defending champions, our preparation back at school has been in full force,” said Tematema, who emphasized the team’s determination to overcome difficulties and successfully defend their crown.
The road has been tough, with some players experiencing doubts and contemplating leaving the squad. However, the spirit of the team endures, drawing strength from their guiding principle. Tematema pointed out that they continually encourage each other using their motto, which has been crucial in motivating players to persist through challenges.
While the team retains many key players from its championship squad, they are acutely aware that this season’s competition will be fiercer, with opponents eager to claim their title. Tematema insists on a respectful approach towards all rivals, stating, “We won’t underestimate or look down on any of our opponents. All teams coming in know the game, and we will give all opponents our best efforts.”
As Ra High School embarks on this new journey today, Tematema radiates confidence, fueled by both their faith and dedication. “With the hard yards done and the Lord on our side, on the field, we will do what we, the Ra people, do best—that is ‘Mae na Mae’ (no matter what, we will pursue our cause),” he proclaimed.
