School districts in Southern Wisconsin are currently assessing the need to close schools on Friday due to an extreme cold watch that is set to take effect from Thursday night through Saturday. The Madison Metropolitan School District, the largest in Dane County, will determine whether to cancel classes following discussions with various departments.
Dr. TJ McCray, the deputy superintendent for MMSD, emphasized that closures could significantly affect students who rely on schools for essential resources, saying, “For some of our families, our schools are the main source of resources for them.” He highlighted the importance of the food pantries at many schools, which provide vital support during inclement weather, and acknowledged the role of teachers in preparing students for potential virtual learning. McCray noted, “If need be, we can assign hotspots to families that show or need an interest for them.”
Meanwhile, the Portage Community School District has committed to giving families advance notice of any closures. District Administrator Joshua Sween assured that decisions would be made by noon the day before any expected weather disruptions. He acknowledged the challenges that some families may face with virtual learning due to lack of internet access and promised alternative arrangements, like providing educational packets.
In a separate situation, the Lake Mills Area School District is navigating challenges following flooding damage caused by a frozen valve at the high school. Water damage has affected several areas, including the main office and gym. District Administrator Tonya Olson reported that a significant portion of the gym floor will require replacement. The district is currently addressing the conditions to ensure student safety and air quality before making a decision about Friday’s classes while continuing cleanup efforts.
These circumstances illustrate the adaptability and commitment of school districts to meet the needs of their students and families, even when faced with extreme weather challenges.
