Wisconsin Immigrant Gets Time Served in Illegal Reentry Case Amid Judge-Evasion Fallout

An immigrant, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, has been sentenced to time served after illegally reentering the United States, following a complicated legal situation that involved a judge’s alleged assistance in evading federal agents. U.S. District Judge Pamela Pepper handed down the sentence on Wednesday in Milwaukee, acknowledging Flores-Ruiz’s nearly seven months in jail since his arrest in April.

Flores-Ruiz, 31, who appeared in court through a translator, expressed remorse for his actions, stating he was grateful for the opportunity to work in the U.S. and pledged never to return. His sentence comes after a plea agreement where he would not contest deportation, and he was warned by Judge Pepper of more severe consequences if he returned to the country.

Born near Michoacan, Mexico, Flores-Ruiz emigrated to the U.S. at 18 in search of a better life, spending a significant portion of his adult life working in restaurants and food trucks. His journey included an arduous crossing from Nogales, Mexico, where he and fellow migrants were apprehended shortly after entering. After attempting to reenter the U.S. days later, he lost his way in the Arizona desert for a month before reaching Milwaukee to reunite with family.

His recent legal troubles began when he was charged with misdemeanor battery after a confrontation with a roommate. The situation escalated when U.S. immigration agents became aware of his status after his fingerprints were submitted from the Milwaukee County Jail. On April 18, immigration agents attempted to arrest him at the courthouse, but Judge Hannah Dugan allegedly assisted Flores-Ruiz in evading his capture, which led to her arrest and indictment for obstruction.

Flores-Ruiz was charged with reentering the U.S. illegally shortly after his apprehension outside the courthouse. He faced up to two years in prison but accepted a plea deal that resulted in a sentence of time served. Additionally, state prosecutors dropped two battery charges against him as part of his agreement.

Flores-Ruiz remains in custody at the Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin, awaiting deportation. His case highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and judicial independence, further intensified by the current political climate. Despite the challenges he has faced, Flores-Ruiz’s story also resonates with many individuals seeking a better life and the relentless pursuit of opportunity.
