A developing coastal system is set to bring a mix of rain and snow to Statesboro and Bulloch County, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston. Residents may experience an unusual taste of winter weather early Sunday morning, with precipitation expected to start late Saturday night primarily as rain.

As colder air moves into the region overnight, temperatures near dawn on Sunday could drop low enough for rain to mix with snow, particularly in inland areas of Bulloch County. While rain is forecasted to dominate, short periods of light wet snow may occur Sunday morning into late morning. Any snow accumulation is anticipated to be minimal, primarily affecting grassy surfaces, rooftops, and elevated roadways like bridges and overpasses.

The primary concern for the region involves isolated slick spots during the early morning hours, especially before temperatures rise above freezing. Although road impacts are expected to be limited, drivers are advised to exercise caution on untreated surfaces.

Following this weather system, much colder air is predicted to settle over southeast Georgia, with overnight lows from Monday to Wednesday expected to drop into the upper teens and low 20s. Wind chills may make it feel even colder during this period.

Residents are urged to take precautions against the cold, including safeguarding pets, plants, and exposed pipes, and checking on neighbors who may be vulnerable.

Corey Kemp, the Director of the Bulloch County Emergency Management Agency, is coordinating assistance for residents who may lack access to warming options, especially with the NWS Charleston issuing an extreme cold weather advisory. Those unable to find a warm place are encouraged to contact the Bulloch County Emergency Operations Center at (912) 489-1901 for help from community partners. Director Kemp emphasizes that the safety and well-being of the community is of utmost importance.
