Cloudy Skies Ahead with Two Snow Chances and a Cold Weekend on the Horizon

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A significant winter weather pattern is set to unfold in the coming days, bringing with it an increased likelihood of snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures.

Today’s forecast indicates an early glimpse of sunshine, but that won’t last as clouds are expected to thicken throughout the day. A light southerly breeze will allow temperatures to rise into the upper 10s in the northern regions and mid-20s to the south.

Snowfall is anticipated to intensify this evening as a clipper system approaches from the northwest. Light to moderate snow is likely to create slick conditions on the roads, especially between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. Some flurries may persist into Wednesday morning’s early hours.

A brief respite from the snow is expected on Wednesday with partial clearing and temperatures reaching upper 20s to low 30s, the only day predicted to experience above-normal highs in the next nine days. However, another round of snow is anticipated later that afternoon into the evening, mirroring the previous system but possibly with less intensity. The best chances for snow accumulation will focus in the northeast, with more scattered activity to the south of U.S. Highway 20.

Forecast models suggest that many areas could see snow accumulation ranging from a trace to 2 inches across a line from Oskaloosa to Washington, extending northward to Highway 20. Regions near and north of Highway 20 may accumulate 2 to 4 inches in total.

Following this busy winter weather period, Thursday is likely to bring a break, featuring partly to mostly cloudy skies and slightly cooler temperatures in the 10s and 20s. However, cold weather alerts will be in effect for Friday and Saturday, as wind chills could feel as low as -20, prompting advisories and warnings for dangerous conditions.

This weekend should remain dry despite the chilly air mass settling into the upper Midwest. A major winter storm developing in the southern states could produce snow and ice, affecting travel plans. Individuals heading to that region are advised to stay updated on local forecasts.

Though frigid temperatures are in store, next week may bring a slight moderation in temperatures, providing a glimmer of warmth as winter persists.
