NORMAL, Ill. — As winter weather continues to impact the area, Normal Public Works crews are diligently working to clear residential roads after main roads have been addressed. Driving conditions remain hazardous, particularly on residential streets, where ice may still pose a risk.
Jason Comfort, Operations Manager for Normal Public Works, noted that the night crew will be deployed to plow snow following this afternoon’s storm, ensuring that every available plow is operational during inclement weather.
In conjunction with these efforts, Brad Park, public information officer for the Normal Police Department, emphasized the importance of safe driving practices during winter conditions. He advised drivers to allocate extra time for travel, drive with caution, and maintain more distance to safely stop their vehicles. Park highlighted the hidden dangers of black ice, which can be deceptive even on seemingly clear roads.
In the event of a skid, Park suggested that drivers remain calm and avoid sudden braking. Instead, drivers should gently lift their foot off the accelerator and steer in the opposite direction of the skid to regain control.
Should an accident occur, Park encourages individuals to call 911 and stay in their vehicle to ensure their safety. Getting out of a car in busy traffic can lead to further accidents, and if the vehicle is still drivable, moving to a nearby road or parking lot is recommended.
Additionally, it is vital to ensure all windows and mirrors are fully cleared of ice and snow before operating a vehicle. Park advises against the common practice of only clearing a small viewing area, as visibility is crucial for both personal safety and the safety of others on the road.
A parking ban is in effect in Normal beginning at 2:30 p.m. and will last until noon on Tuesday. During this time, vehicles are prohibited from parking on streets, but parking is permitted in driveways, garages, or designated free public parking lots.
