A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been declared for several regions of Western New York, effective from 4 p.m. on Wednesday until 1 p.m. on Friday. The affected areas include Southern Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Wyoming Counties, encompassing cities such as Warsaw, Jamestown, Olean, Orchard Park, and Springville. Additionally, a separate warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Friday for Northern Erie and Genesee Counties, including Buffalo and Batavia.
According to updates from the National Weather Service, lake effect snow bands are expected to develop south of Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon. These bands will strengthen overnight and move northward, impacting the Buffalo area through early Thursday morning. Snowfall is anticipated to intensify, with rates of 2-3 inches per hour, particularly in the southern regions. Winds are forecasted to gust near 45 miles per hour, creating potential whiteout conditions that could lead to hazardous travel.
As colder air moves in, a transition from rain to snow is anticipated in the area. The heaviest snowfall is likely to occur along the Chautauqua Ridge and the Southtowns, with South Buffalo expected to receive more snow than its northern counterpart. With temperatures dropping into the 20s and strong winds contributing to blowing and drifting snow, wind chills may reach near zero degrees.
Residents should prepare for possible school closures and cancellations of school activities on Thursday. Meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
As this winter storm develops, it offers communities an opportunity to experience the beauty of a winter wonderland, albeit with the need to exercise caution. Staying informed and prepared will help ensure safety as the snow blankets Western New York.
