A potent clipper system is poised to bring wintry conditions to the region on Wednesday, with certain areas expecting accumulating snowfall. Light snow is forecasted to commence this morning, intensifying especially in the northern parts of the region. Locations such as the Catskills, Taconics, and Berkshires are predicted to receive light to moderate snow accumulations due to the effects of terrain-enhanced snowfall throughout the day. In contrast, the Capital Region and Hudson Valley are likely to experience lighter precipitation, with possible rain mixing in as the day progresses. Snow accumulations in these lower elevation areas are expected to be minimal, transitioning to light drizzle by the evening.
Cloud cover will persist overnight as colder air from the west pushes into the region. On Thursday, temperatures are projected to reach around 30 degrees just before dawn but will then drop into the 20s for the majority of the day. Winds are anticipated to pick up in the afternoon, with gusts potentially reaching 40 mph in the western Mohawk Valley. Though there may be the chance of a few lake effect flurries, the majority of the area is expected to stay dry. As the weekend nears, temperatures will remain cold, with highs ranging from the upper 20s to low 30s. There may be a few snow showers on Saturday, but overall, precipitation is expected to remain light.
Citizens should stay informed on school closings and weather updates as conditions develop. While the weather may be challenging, it also offers a chance for winter activities and enjoying the season’s beauty.
