A 13 Weather Impact Alert remains in effect through this evening as strong winds and snowfall are creating hazardous travel conditions across West Michigan.

The cold front that moved in on Wednesday evening brought not only strong winds but also thunder and lightning. Gusts throughout the region were recorded exceeding 50 mph, including a staggering gust of 74 mph observed in South Haven.

Significant snowfall began on Wednesday evening and is expected to continue into Thursday. A combination of strong winds, cold temperatures, and accumulating snow is leading to challenging morning commutes. As a result, Winter Storm warnings have been issued for a large portion of West Michigan.

Forecasts indicate that areas to the west of US-131 could receive over 6 inches of additional snow, with isolated regions potentially seeing between 8 to 10 inches. On the other hand, regions along and east of US-131 are predicted to experience lighter snowfall, with estimates of an additional 1 to 3 inches. Wind gusts are forecasted at 35-45 mph.

The storm’s impacts are significant, as visibility may drop to less than a quarter of a mile due to blowing and falling snow. There are also concerns of sporadic power outages and the development of black ice on roadways. Furthermore, lake-effect snow is expected to worsen conditions in areas west of US-131.

For those planning to travel late Wednesday into Thursday, it’s crucial to prepare by keeping essential items in your vehicle in case you encounter difficulties or emergencies. Recommended supplies include:

– Ice scraper
– Extra winter clothing
– Spare blankets
– Snacks
– Portable phone charger

Additionally, it’s wise to have emergency supplies stocked in your vehicle, including:

– Snow shovel
– Sand or cat litter for extra traction
– Traction mats
– Road flares
– Flashlight
– Reflectors
