The effects of Winter Storm Fern continue to be felt across Lubbock and West Texas, particularly in road conditions impacted by lingering snow and ice. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing until Tuesday, there are concerns about potential refreezing overnight.

As a result, numerous schools and higher education institutions in the region have decided to cancel classes for Monday, January 26. The following is a comprehensive list of closures, impacting both public and private educational institutions as well as colleges and universities.

Public schools in the Lubbock area affected include Abernathy ISD, Brownfield ISD, Floydada ISD, Frenship ISD, Idalou ISD, Levelland ISD, Littlefield ISD, Lubbock ISD, Lubbock-Cooper ISD, New Deal ISD, Ralls ISD, Roosevelt ISD, and Shallowater ISD, all confirming canceled classes for the day.

In addition, Lubbock ISD has made significant arrangements by closing all schools and administrative offices, designating Monday as a planning day for staff working from home. Students will still receive meal services at various high school locations between 10 and 11 a.m.

Private educational institutions, such as Christ the King Schools, Kingdom Preparatory Academy, Trinity Christian School, and Harmony Science Academy Lubbock, have also canceled on-campus learning and opted for virtual classes on Monday.

Colleges and universities in the area, including Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock Christian University, South Plains College, and Wayland Baptist University, have similarly canceled in-person classes and activities. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center will operate on a delayed schedule for its clinics.

In addition to educational closures, the City of Lubbock will also close its offices on January 26, although some libraries will remain open as warming centers, providing a resource for the community. The Mahon Library will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the Groves Library will open from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Lubbock County Courthouse is expected to have a delayed opening at noon.

While the storm’s peak may have passed, these precautions reflect a strong commitment to public safety and community welfare in Lubbock. Local officials are encouraging residents to stay safe, remain indoors if possible, and utilize available resources during this challenging weather event.
