A significant winter storm, named Devin, is set to disrupt travel plans for many as people return home after the Christmas holiday. As the storm approaches on Friday, its effects will primarily be felt across the Great Lakes and Northeast regions, while the West Coast continues to deal with heavy rain and potential flooding.

In the Great Lakes and Northeast, weather forecasts predict a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. An ice storm warning has been issued for parts of central and western Pennsylvania, with ice accumulations potentially exceeding 0.25 inches, raising concerns about downed trees and power outages. Winter storm warnings are also in effect for New York City, upstate New York, the Poconos, and parts of northern New Jersey and Connecticut. In these areas, snowfall could accumulate to between 5 to 8 inches, with isolated locations possibly reaching up to a foot, leading to hazardous travel conditions and significant flight delays at major airports.

Meanwhile, the Pacific storm affecting California will start to subside, but heavy rainfall is expected to persist, particularly in the southern parts of the state. As snow falls in the Sierra Nevada and the northern Rockies, there will likely be challenging driving conditions in these mountainous areas.

On Saturday, winter conditions will continue to linger in the Rockies and Northern Plains. Snow showers may still occur, with added ice concerns from residual precipitation. Areas along the Canadian border may also see light snow or a wintry mix due to a cold front.

Looking ahead to Sunday, travel may face additional challenges with the approach of another cold front. The storm’s effects could result in freezing rain and snow during the day, particularly across the Northeast, with most regions expected to see rain. Strong winds accompanying the cold front could exacerbate travel hazards. In the Midwest, cold winds will create tricky driving conditions, especially on east-west routes, and heavy lake-effect snowfall is expected in northern Wisconsin and Michigan, potentially leading to whiteout conditions.

The forecast suggests that travelers should remain vigilant and prepared for potential delays across numerous airports, including those in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Indianapolis.

As the holiday season unfolds, it is essential for everyone to stay updated on weather changes and to take necessary precautions for safe travels. While adverse weather may create some difficulties, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of preparation and awareness during winter conditions. Wishing everyone a safe and joyful holiday season!
