LIVIGNO, Italy — Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle and Canada’s Eliot Grondin have once again proven themselves as frontrunners in men’s snowboardcross, clinching gold and silver medals respectively at the Winter Olympics on Thursday. Their competition ended in another nail-biting finish, reminiscent of the close races they have had in previous events.

Grondin appeared poised to change the outcome from the Beijing 2022 Olympics when he surged ahead during the final stretch. However, Haemmerle managed to significantly close the gap in the last meters, ultimately crossing the finish line just 0.03 seconds ahead of Grondin. This closely contested race continued the trend of their fierce rivalry, as Haemmerle’s winning margin four years ago was a mere 0.02 seconds.

Taking home the bronze medal was fellow Austrian Jakob Dusek, who narrowly kept France’s Aidan Chollet off the podium, highlighting the competitive nature of this event as all four skiers had a chance at victory as they approached the finish.

In what is a fast-paced and thrilling sport, snowboardcross involves four riders racing down a course filled with banks and bumps, where the first two competitors from each round advance to the final. Nick Baumgartner, the 2022 Olympic mixed snowboardcross champion from the United States, reached the semifinals before his elimination.

Adding to Austria’s success, Benjamin Karl also defended his title in men’s parallel giant slalom just days before, showcasing the country’s strong performance in winter sports.

This latest victory underscores the exceptional depth of talent in snowboardcross and the thrilling rivalries that continue to captivate fans. Both Haemmerle and Grondin have established themselves as elite athletes, promising exciting competitions in the future as they continue to elevate the sport.
