Ryder recounted that after she had already been cast in the role, the filmmakers changed their stance upon viewing “Heathers.” They felt that the dark comedy, which addressed serious themes like teen suicide, was inappropriate and offensive. “They thought it was making fun of teen suicide,” Ryder explained, emphasizing her stance on maintaining her artistic integrity despite the backlash. “I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t gonna apologize.”
The film “Heathers,” where Ryder portrayed Veronica Sawyer, revolves around a group of popular girls in high school who engage in cruel behaviors, culminating in dark themes of manipulation and murder. Ryder’s talent shone through despite her agent’s dire warnings against taking the role. She recalled her agent getting on her knees to plead with her, saying it would ruin her future career. Nevertheless, Ryder feels she made the right choice, having stated, “I think I made the right call.”
Producer Denise Di Novi has also praised Ryder’s courage in pursuing the role, noting in a 2019 retrospective that many thought producing “Heathers” was a risky decision. Di Novi commended Ryder as a smart and brave young actress, who passionately connected with the film’s script.
