The 85th Flying Training Squadron (FTS) “Tigers” recently took part in the inaugural “Wings for Warriors” outreach program, collaborating with the Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, on November 15, 2024.
Led by U.S. Air Force Captains Charles Blum and Tyler Konek, along with four T-6 Nation instructor pilots, the program aimed to uplift patients, their families, and medical staff with a festive spirit as the holiday season approaches. “We wanted to spark the start of the holiday season through honoring young warriors, who are fighting through some of the most difficult realities imaginable, including cancer and incurable illnesses,” said Capt. Blum.
During the event, the pilots engaged with over 100 young patients and families, beginning with a large gathering at the hospital’s recreational area, “The Zone.” They visited the cancer center, providing personal interactions with patients facing various medical challenges and ailments.
“It’s heartwarming to know that the holiday cheer reached the children and staff at the Texas Children’s Hospital,” commented Lt. Col. Imran Khan, Commander of the 85th FTS. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating that they reflect the community-focused spirit of the instructor pilots and Team XL.
As part of the visit, the instructors built T-6 Lego models, painted toy aircraft, and worked on Air Force aircraft coloring books with the children. These activities not only encouraged creativity but also allowed the instructors to learn from the patients’ inspiring stories. “The visit impacted the patients in an extremely positive way,” noted Capt. Konek, who highlighted the enthusiasm that accompanied the door-to-door visits, particularly among those who had recently undergone treatment.
Throughout the day, the young patients were made “Honorary Tigers” and received flight suit nametapes and squadron morale gear, generating excitement and a sense of belonging. “The patients thoroughly appreciated getting their own ‘Honorary Tiger’ patches, and they were excited about becoming a part of the 85 FTS Tiger Family,” said Capt. Blum.
This outreach effort exemplifies the Air Force’s core value of “Service Before Self,” providing much-needed joy to those affected by significant hardships. The “Wings for Warriors” initiative not only created an opportunity for personal development within the squadron but also fostered meaningful community connections, inspiring resilience among the young patients.
Reflecting on the experience, Capt. Blum expressed, “Learning about the goals and dreams of each of the patients through one-on-one interactions was incredibly impactful. Hearing their stories and sharing tangible experiences with them helped showcase the courage and perseverance of each patient. We let them know we are fighting along with them. I will never forget this experience, and I will take these memories throughout the rest of my life.”
Overall, this event serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of youth facing adversity and the importance of community engagement in inspiring hope and perseverance. It reflects a hopeful outlook, indicating that even in challenging times, support and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.
