The 85th Flying Training Squadron (FTS), also known as the “Tigers,” recently took part in a heartwarming initiative called “Wings for Warriors.” This outreach program, in collaboration with the Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, took place on November 15, 2024, marking the event’s inaugural occurrence.

Led by U.S. Air Force Captains Charles Blum and Tyler Konek, instructor pilots from the 85th FTS, a team of four T-6 Nation instructor pilots aimed to bring joy and festive spirit to patients, their families, and the dedicated staff at TCH. “We wanted to spark the start of the holiday season by honoring the young warriors enduring tremendous challenges, including cancer and other serious illnesses,” stated Capt. Blum.

During their visit, the pilots interacted with over 100 patients and their families, beginning with a large gathering in the hospital’s recreational area known as “The Zone.” The squadron’s engagement included traveling from room to room in the TCH Cancer Center, connecting with patients facing a variety of medical difficulties.

Lt. Col. Imran Khan, the commander of the 85th FTS, reflected on the experience, saying, “It’s heartwarming to know that our holiday cheer reached the children and staff at the Texas Children’s Hospital. Contributing to the community in such meaningful ways showcases the compassionate spirit of our Instructor Pilots and Team XL.”

The instructors participated in fun activities with the patients, such as building T-6 Lego models, painting toy aircraft, and going through Air Force aircraft coloring books. These interactions not only provided encouragement but also established a valuable opportunity to listen to the patients’ stories.

“The visit had a tremendously positive impact on the patients,” remarked Capt. Konek. He noted that the child life program coordinators at TCH emphasized how thrilled the kids were to see the pilots and how much the door-to-door visits lifted their spirits, particularly for those who had recently undergone treatment.

As a special token, patients were made “Honorary Tigers” and received flight suit nametapes along with squadron morale gear. “The patients greatly appreciated their ‘Honorary Tiger’ patches and were excited to become part of the 85 FTS Tiger Family,” said Capt. Blum.

The outreach exemplified the Air Force’s Core Value of “Service Before Self,” as the 85th FTS provided a significant morale boost to families grappling with difficult circumstances. The “Wings for Warriors” event not only fostered personal growth and development within the squadron but also inspired resilience in the younger generation through meaningful community engagement.

Capt. Blum reflected on the importance of the connections made during the visit, stating, “Learning about the goals and dreams of each patient through one-on-one interactions was incredibly impactful. Hearing their stories and sharing tangible experiences with them illuminated their bravery and resilience. We let them know we are fighting alongside them. This experience will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

This initiative highlights the power of community engagement and the ability of simple acts of kindness to bring light into the lives of those facing extraordinary challenges. It serves as a reminder that hope and support can flourish even in the most difficult times.
