In the wake of his passing, many in Wilmington’s theatrical scene have taken to social media to share heartfelt tributes and cherished memories of their time with Teal. Fellow actor Mathis Turner reflected on their experiences, admitting that Teal’s immense talent often left others feeling overshadowed, but also inspired them to improve. Turner shared, “Paul was a hero to me, a person with extraordinary talent who never compromised his character or compassion.”
Teal’s extensive career spanned roles with multiple Wilmington theater companies, including the Opera House Theatre Co., Thalian Association Community Theatre, and Techmoja Dance and Theater Co. He was known for his boyish charm, impressive vocal ability, and dynamic stage presence, excelling in a variety of roles from innocent characters like Huck in “Big River” to more complex parts such as in “The Last Five Years.”
His portrayal of Jack Kelly in the “Newsies,” his final performance, was particularly noteworthy and earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Thalian Hall CEO Shane Fernando praised Teal’s perfectionism and supportive nature during their collaborations, adding that even during his treatment, Teal remained focused on giving back to the community, eager to mentor young talent through the Pied Piper Theatre program.
