William Wylie Clarke Re-Elected President of the Fiji Law Society Amid Scrutiny

William Wylie Clarke has been re-elected as President of the Fiji Law Society, securing a significant win with 80 votes compared to challenger Dorsami Naidu’s 39 votes. This decisive re-election occurred during the Society’s Annual General Meeting held last night. Clarke’s victory affirms his leadership and sets the stage for continued efforts in key areas that are pivotal to the Society’s mission.

In his victory statement, Clarke expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the trust his colleagues have placed in him once more. He emphasized the responsibilities of his office and his dedication to advancing the Society’s objectives. Clarke outlined his focus for the new term, which includes enhancing pro bono legal services, upholding the rule of law, and modernizing the Society’s systems to optimize member services.

Joining Clarke in leadership roles are Poonam Maharaj Wong of Neel Shivam Lawyers, elected as Vice President, alongside newly elected Council Members Seruwaia Nayacalevu, Mele Rakai, Dilan Patel, Jotishna Nair, Arthi Swamy, and Jovilisi Liganivai. This newly formed leadership team is poised to bring fresh perspectives and energy to the Fiji Law Society.

This re-election comes amidst a backdrop of external challenges and scrutiny. Previous reports indicated that Clarke was under the spotlight in relation to a Commission of Inquiry investigation, drawing attention from international legal organizations that have voiced concerns about legal independence in Fiji. Despite these challenges, Clarke’s re-election reflects confidence in his leadership and a mandate to uphold and protect the integrity of the legal profession in the country.

The Fiji Law Society stands at a vital juncture, with its leadership reaffirmed and reshaped, ready to tackle both internal goals and external pressures. This continuity in leadership ensures a stable platform from which the Society can pursue necessary reforms and uphold justice and integrity within the legal framework of Fiji. The legal community in Fiji looks forward with optimism as Clarke and his team embark on this new chapter.
