Netflix’s latest romantic comedy spy-thriller, “The Union,” focuses on the rekindled romance between two former high school sweethearts: Mike, a construction worker played by Mark Wahlberg, and secret agent Roxanne, portrayed by Halle Berry.
Despite their romantic connection, the film’s 109-minute runtime does not feature a single kiss between the characters, a creative choice that director Julian Farino explains was carefully considered. Farino stated that the team aimed to leave audiences wanting more. “We take the relationship to a certain place, and then I think you’ve got to leave a lot of space to go,” he mentioned during the film’s L.A. premiere. He added that Netflix encouraged them to envision the possibility of future installments, suggesting that a desire for a kiss indicates they’ve successfully engaged the audience.
During the red carpet event outside Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater, Berry and Wahlberg supported Farino’s vision. Berry emphasized the importance of the journey the characters take without rushing to a conclusion. “Once they kiss, then it’s over. We’re hoping if we get to do a second one, we’ll let that chase continue,” she remarked. Wahlberg shared a similar sentiment, hinting that if more films are made, there would likely be much more than just a kiss.
In addition to its romantic elements, “The Union” features dynamic action sequences, with filming locations spanning New Jersey, New York, London, and Slovenia. Berry expressed excitement about the opportunity to shoot in real locations rather than on sound stages, stating that it contributes to the film’s authenticity and helps actors immerse themselves in the characters.
“The Union” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
