The latest installment of Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four,” titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” continues the trend of disappointment for fans expecting a compelling superhero film. Following various unsuccessful adaptations over the past few decades, this 2023 release, directed by Matt Shakman, unfortunately does little to revive interest in the iconic team created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s.
Despite a nostalgic setting that aims to transport audiences back to the colorful 1960s, the film ultimately suffers from the same flaws that plagued previous versions. Critics note that the characters are underdeveloped and lack the charisma needed to captivate viewers—especially when compared to the dynamic family unit portrayed in Pixar’s “The Incredibles.”
In this latest adaptation, Mister Fantastic, played by Pedro Pascal, leads a team that includes Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm, who is portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. While Grimm emerges as a more interesting character, the rest of the team fails to evoke any real emotional engagement. The film’s attempts at humor and connection, particularly involving Sue Storm’s pregnancy and character interactions, fall flat due to poorly written dialogue and lack of narrative depth.
Additionally, the film features the menacing presence of Galactus and the Silver Surfer, bringing forth a narrative that combines battle sequences with drawn-out exposition. Critics have pointed out that these elements contribute to a disjointed viewing experience that occasionally overwhelms viewers with its chaotic climax.
In a positive light, the movie does carry an underlying message about the importance of humor even in tough times, reminding audiences to find joy amidst desolation. However, this seems insufficient to redeem an overall lackluster entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As Marvel continues its exploration of the “Fantastic Four” franchise, the question arises—can they finally deliver a definitive adaptation that resonates with both hardcore fans and newcomers?
