An immigration detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz” is set to open soon in an isolated Everglades airfield, prompting concerns from environmental and human rights advocates. The facility, comprised of heavy-duty tents and trailers, is part of Florida’s response to the federal government’s Immigration enforcement strategies aimed to increase the number of detention beds available.
Florida officials aim to operationalize 5,000 immigration detention beds by early July, acknowledging a significant increase in detentions, which reached over 56,000 in June, the highest count since 2019. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, a key figure in the state’s immigration enforcement plan, stated that the isolated location serves as both a deterrent and a suitable site for the facility due to its extreme conditions and remoteness.
However, the decision has drawn sharp criticism from environmentalists and activists. Groups, including Friends of the Everglades, emphasize that the area represents a fragile ecosystem, urging for its protection rather than exploitation for detention purposes. Moreover, Florida Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost condemned the facility, claiming it represents a “cruel spectacle” aimed at dehumanizing immigrants.
Despite the backlash, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has expressed support for the new facility, with Secretary Kristi Noem highlighting plans to enhance existing resources swiftly. The initiative will largely be funded by FEMA, through its Shelter and Services Program, reflecting a trend in U.S. policy to bolster enforcement.
Local authorities in Florida are using emergency powers to move forward with the project, which raises concerns regarding legal and procedural propriety. Critics regard this method as an abuse of power, bypassing proper channels to fast-track construction.
