Yellowstone National Park officials are dispelling recent social media rumors suggesting that wildlife is abandoning the park in response to fears of potential volcanic eruptions. Misinformation, particularly an AI-generated video portraying animals like grizzly bears and mountain lions leaving in large numbers, has circulated across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, leading some to believe the animals can sense impending geological activity.
Linda Veress, a spokesperson for the National Park Service (NPS), clarified that these claims are unfounded. “Wildlife is not leaving Yellowstone National Park in large numbers,” she stated, emphasizing that no scientific evidence supports the idea that animals can predict earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The NPS believes the circulating video is satirical, crafted from AI-generated footage.
Yellowstone is under continuous observation by the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, which comprises nine federal and state agencies tracking volcanic, hydrothermal, and seismic activity within the park. Veress reassured that the monitoring systems, designed to identify sudden seismic shifts or gas emissions indicative of volcanic activity, have detected no abnormal signs. She noted that while an eruption is theoretically possible, it remains highly unlikely within the next thousand to ten thousand years.
The park has experienced three major eruptions historically, with the last significant event occurring roughly 174,000 years ago, resulting in the formation of the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake. The most recent substantial eruption took place approximately 631,000 years ago, with around 80 smaller eruptions reported since.
