Evacuation orders are currently in effect as a significant wildfire continues to blaze in the Sylmar area of Santa Clarita, California. Known as the Hurst Fire, it has scorched approximately 855 acres and is only 10% contained as of now.
The fire ignited around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the 5900 block of Yarnell Street, rapidly escalating to more than 100 acres within just 30 minutes, according to representatives from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). By Wednesday evening, the fire had grown to around 850 acres without any containment reported.
Evacuations have been mandated for residents located north of the Foothill (210) Freeway, stretching from Roxford Street to the intersection of the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) Freeways. In addition, evacuation warnings have been issued for parts of Santa Clarita, including areas along Calgrove Boulevard, Wildwood, and Eternal Valley.
In response to the fire’s progression, the 210 Freeway experienced temporary closures between Roxford and the 5 Freeway, although some lanes reopened Wednesday morning. Certain connectors and off-ramps, including the southbound Golden State Freeway connector and part of the 14 Freeway, are currently closed.
For those who have been evacuated, shelters have been established in Pacoima, Northridge, and Panorama City. The facilities are located at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, Northridge Park, and Sepulveda Recreation Center. Additionally, those needing to evacuate large animals can utilize the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.
According to reports from the governor’s office, over 44,000 residents are currently under evacuation orders, and approximately 40,000 structures are at risk due to the fire.
While the situation remains dire, many community members and emergency personnel are banding together to support evacuees and protect the threatened areas.
