A significant sideshow involving approximately 200 vehicles took place early Saturday morning, stretching from Rodeo to Vallejo and leading to a brush fire sparked by illegal fireworks. The chaotic event commenced around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Franklin Canyon Road and Highway 4 in Rodeo, where dazzling car stunts accompanied by explosives drew attention from spectators.

Vallejo Police reported no injuries or arrests resulting from the event, despite the dangerous conditions caused by motorists engaging in reckless behavior. “The concern is that we’re still having the sideshows, and it is putting people’s lives in jeopardy,” expressed Denielle Dwonch, a Vallejo resident.

The fireworks display, rather than being a celebratory spectacle, ignited a small brush fire in the surrounding vegetation. Assistant Chief Dominic Ciotola of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District mentioned that quick action from the fire units contained the blaze, emphasizing the area’s vulnerability to larger fires. “Out in that area, Franklin Canyon, we have acres and acres of open vegetation… so we’re lucky,” he noted, acknowledging that favorable weather conditions prevented the situation from worsening.

As the sideshow caravan transitioned into Vallejo, it left behind tire marks visible along roadways, raising concerns among local residents. “It happens a lot, and I know it’s dangerous,” shared Bernadette Asuncion, highlighting the ongoing issue with such impromptu events. Dwonch further emphasized the risks posed by potential intoxicated drivers participating in the stunts, which often attract youth and create unsafe environments.

While local authorities strive to manage these gatherings, the sheer number of participants complicates law enforcement efforts. “The police are active when there is a sideshow… But when you’re dealing with 200 people, how do you really get a grip on that?” Dwonch lamented.

In light of this incident, the community continues to grapple with finding solutions to enforce safety regulations while curbing the prevalence of sideshows. There’s hope that increased awareness and engagement from law enforcement will lead to a safer environment for both participants and bystanders in the future.
