The 2024 Boeing Apple Cup concluded with a thrilling finish on Saturday, where Washington fell to Washington State with a score of 24-19 at Lumen Field in Seattle.
This victory marks only the third time since 2008 that Washington State has triumphed in the Apple Cup. The game was part of a five-year agreement to maintain the rivalry, even as the teams are no longer in the same conference. The crowd showed a clear preference for the Huskies, with more purple than crimson on display.
Quarterback Will Rogers passed for 314 yards and one touchdown for Washington, while Giles Jackson recorded eight receptions for 162 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Despite this offensive effort, the Huskies were unable to convert on three occasions inside the Washington State 25-yard line, ultimately costing them the game.
With just 3:40 left in the game, Washington took over at their own 31-yard line. Rogers connected with Jackson for a 45-yard gain on the first play, advancing the team to the Washington State 10. However, when faced with a crucial third-and-goal situation, Denzel Boston was forced out at the 1-yard line, resulting in a fourth-and-goal. Washington opted for an option play, but Jonah Coleman was tackled for a 2-yard loss, sealing the outcome for the Cougars. Coleman finished the game with 75 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Grady Gross was a standout for the Huskies, successfully making all four of his field goal attempts, setting a new career high. His kicks came from 44, 42, 24, and 43 yards.
Jackson’s performance included 101 receiving yards in the first half alone, marking his second career game with over 100 yards. The Huskies will next face Northwestern in their Big Ten opener on Saturday, September 21, at 4 p.m. Tickets for the game are available.
