Reports of ground shaking were received from several locations following a recent seismic event near Santa Barbara, California. Many residents described their experiences using the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, offering insights into the varied intensity and nature of the shaking.

A resident at 4810 San Simeon Drive, located 75.8 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, reported light shaking (MMI IV) lasting approximately 10 minutes, starting with gentle tremors before a loud banging noise was heard against their window. Similarly, in Isla Vista, 292.8 kilometers east-southeast of the epicenter, another individual experienced light shaking accompanied by a loud boom that rattled their home, likening it to the sound of a car crashing.

Residents in Orcutt and Santa Maria also reported varying degrees of shaking. In Orcutt, located only 2.6 kilometers west of the epicenter, a very weak shaking (MMI II) was experienced alongside a rumbling noise followed by an explosive sound shortly after. Conversely, Santa Maria residents described the vibrations as quite weak (MMI II), accompanied by a sensation of the floor vibrating underfoot.

In Santa Barbara, reports ranged from moderate shaking (MMI V) to weak vibrations (MMI III). One account noted a series of three loud booms that initially led residents to believe that something had struck their house, while another mentioned a thunder-like sound followed by prolonged vibrations.

Additional reports indicate that the shaking was felt across a wide radius, with varying intensity levels. For example, Goleta residents reported light to moderate shaking, with descriptions including rattling and vertical swings.

This widespread experience of shaking put many people on alert, revealing the dynamic nature of seismic activity in this region. Overall, the contrasting reports reflect a mixture of concern and curiosity among the residents. The event serves as a reminder of the geological forces at play in California, highlighting the importance of preparedness in areas vulnerable to seismic movements.
