A live musical television special featuring the stars of the upcoming “Wicked” film, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is scheduled to air on NBC this fall. This exciting event will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles as a lead-up to the sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” set for release on November 21.
Jon M. Chu, the director of “Wicked,” shared the news during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to advertisers at Radio City Music Hall in New York. He highlighted that this will mark the first time songs from the beloved Broadway musical have been showcased in a live broadcast format.
Chu expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am absolutely delighted to let you in on a centerpiece of our campaign for the second film. This is something that’s never been done in the 22-year history of ‘Wicked.’ Our stars, the wonderful Cynthia Erivo and incandescent Ariana Grande, will be joined by their castmates and some surprise guests in a one-time-only event. They will perform live many songs from the first movie and perhaps a little from the second one, creating what promises to be a thrilling night of entertainment.”
Additionally, Chu treated attendees to a sneak peek of the unreleased trailer for “Wicked: For Good,” playfully warning everyone to keep their phones away for the reveal, using the whimsical reference of “fly monkeys” for security.
This event not only highlights the enduring popularity of “Wicked” but also builds excitement for its continuation with the upcoming sequel. Fans can look forward to a visually and musically captivating experience as the cast brings these iconic songs to life on television.
