Why the US Soccer Federation’s Manager Search Could Get Interesting

Herculez Gomez outlines why he believes the U.S. should continue searching for high-profile managers if Jürgen Klopp declines.

The United States Soccer Federation has started contacting candidates to replace recently dismissed manager Gregg Berhalter, including reaching out to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. However, it seems unlikely that Klopp will engage in further discussions, sources informed ESPN.

Klopp, 57, has stated his intention to take a 12-month break from management after nearly nine years with Liverpool. An ESPN source indicated that Klopp might not manage again and noted that his potential financial demands, likely exceeding eight figures, could pose an additional challenge.

The U.S. is seeking a new manager after officially dismissing Berhalter following a disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa América, where the USMNT failed to advance beyond the group stage.

U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker mentioned during a call with reporters on Wednesday that he plans to start the search immediately and aims to have a new manager in place by the September international window.

“I just want to get the best coach possible who can help the team win. Whether they’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, they must fit the profile, which means being a serial winning coach capable of developing this group of players,” Crocker said.

While Crocker hopes to expedite the process, he is prepared to appoint an interim coach if necessary.

“I also understand some challenges might prevent this from happening by September,” he said. “If it doesn’t happen, I have a contingency plan to ensure consistency and prevent major disruptions during the September window.”
