Michelle Moore, the first contestant to win a million dollars on Wheel of Fortune, has shared insights into her experience that challenge the common perception of instant wealth. After winning $1,026,800 in October 2008, just days after her honeymoon, Moore has revealed that the money did not significantly alter her life as one might expect.

In a candid interview with Fox News, Moore clarified that winners do not receive the full amount due to taxes and other deductions, which can diminish the perceived wealth. “Honestly, you don’t get the full amount of money. So, a million dollars, it doesn’t really go that far,” she stated. Moore recounted that her winnings primarily went toward practical expenses, such as paying off student loans, buying a car, and investing in a new home, rather than indulging in extravagant luxuries.

Moore, who applied multiple times to appear on the iconic game show, described her historic win as a humbling experience. The newfound wealth did not turn her life into a lavish lifestyle, contrary to what many might believe. “People do think that it will change your entire life… but I guess it really depends on what your passions and your values are,” she explained, emphasizing her and her family’s preference for a “very mellow life.”

Despite the practical realities of her winnings, Moore spoke fondly of her time on Wheel of Fortune, recalling it as “wonderful” and “a really incredible experience.” Since her groundbreaking win, three other contestants have also claimed the million-dollar prize: Autumn Erhard in 2013, Sarah Manchester in 2014, and the most recent winner, Christina Derevjanik, in September 2025, who took home the largest amount in the show’s history at $1,035,155.

Moore’s journey serves as a reminder that while winning a significant amount of money can bring opportunities, it often comes with responsibilities and does not guarantee a life of luxury. Her story encourages a thoughtful approach to wealth, focusing instead on values and meaningful experiences.
