WHO Opens Refurbished Office in Micronesia to Boost Pacific Health

Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for the Western Pacific, highlighted the urgent health challenges facing the Pacific region as he inaugurated the newly refurbished WHO multi-country office in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. This visit marks his first to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and comes at a crucial time when the four autonomous states are grappling with significant health sector issues.

In his statement on X, Dr. Piukala expressed excitement about the establishment of the office, which also extends its support to nearby Pacific Island nations, including Palau and the Marshall Islands. He emphasized the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and climate-related emergencies that are increasingly putting pressure on health systems throughout Micronesia.

Dr. Piukala acknowledged the continuous support required from government and civil society partners to tackle these pressing challenges effectively. He mentioned that despite the small size of the office, led by newly appointed Representative Dr. Roderico Ofrin, its impact is substantial and far-reaching.

During his four-day visit, Dr. Piukala plans to engage with government officials, health workers, and visit project sites to gain insights into the ongoing health initiatives and explore areas that require enhanced support. He expressed gratitude toward the WHO staff in Pohnpei for their dedication to strengthening healthcare in the region, setting a positive tone for collaboration and future progress in addressing health issues in Micronesia.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to bolstering health resilience amid the distinct challenges faced by island communities, showcasing the WHO’s ongoing efforts to cultivate partnerships and enhance the well-being of populations in the Pacific.
