Robert Whittaker is receiving significant sympathy on social media following his submission defeat to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308 on Saturday. UFC commentator Daniel Cormier posted a graphic image revealing Whittaker’s front teeth, which appeared bloodied and completely misaligned.
Whittaker’s resilience has always been recognized, but there was some surprise over his rapid tap-out during Chimaev’s chin lock in the first round of their co-main event fight. The former UFC middleweight champion tapped frantically with both hands as Chimaev executed a rear-naked choke. Commentators speculated that Whittaker may have dislocated his jaw, a concern that Chimaev confirmed when he mentioned hearing a click during the match. However, it appears the injury was even more serious.
Cormier shared a photograph sent to him that showed Whittaker’s front three teeth dislocated and facing incorrect directions. The shocking image has been spreading rapidly online, with just two shares generating over 500,000 views in less than an hour.
“I felt something was wrong with his chin when I pushed it,” Chimaev remarked to reporters during the UFC 308 post-fight press conference. “I feel bad. I didn’t mean to break his chin, but it’s my work. If I make someone feel pain, it makes me happy.”
Following the victory, Chimaev called for a shot at the UFC middleweight title, marking a significant milestone as the first person to submit Whittaker in the UFC. He remains undefeated in his professional career, improving to 14-0 after defeating two former UFC champions in succession.
