White Sox Manage Rookie Sensation Smith Amid Playoff Push

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox are carefully managing Shane Smith’s workload as the season enters its final stretch. The rookie right-hander pitched three innings in a 4-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians during the first game of a split doubleheader. Manager Will Venable noted that the shortened outing was part of a planned strategy to help Smith navigate the remainder of the season, stating, “As we try to find ways to navigate the season with him, just thought a shorter outing was appropriate today.”

During his 18th start of the year, Smith allowed two runs from back-to-back home runs hit by Daniel Schneemann and Angel Martínez in the second inning. Despite this, he managed to strike out five batters without issuing any walks. Smith is headed to his first All-Star Game this Tuesday in Atlanta, representing the White Sox as their sole selection. His current record stands at 3-7 with a 4.26 ERA over 86⅔ innings.

Smith expressed enthusiasm about participating in the Midsummer Classic, saying, “If they give me the ball, I’m definitely going to throw. No matter what.”

In the second game of the doubleheader, the White Sox made a comeback to secure a thrilling 5-4 victory, though they still find themselves in last place in the AL Central with a record of 32-63. Venable reiterated that the team’s strategy for Smith will be evaluated on a “start by start” basis, emphasizing the importance of both team success and Smith’s individual development.

In roster news, first baseman Tim Elko was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right knee sprain, having been removed from the first game after experiencing knee soreness. Elko has struggled this season, batting .145 with four home runs and eight RBIs over 20 games. To bolster the lineup, outfielder Will Robertson was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and started in left field for the nightcap. Robertson joined the team following a trade with Toronto earlier this week.

This strategic approach from the White Sox could pay dividends in the long run, especially with the development of young talents like Shane Smith, who is showing promise as he gains experience at the major league level.
