The Phillies have released Whit Merrifield, whom they had hoped would become a valuable utility player. However, Merrifield turned out to be an $8 million disappointment. In 174 plate appearances, he hit just .199 with a .572 OPS and didn’t make it to the All-Star break.
Previously an All-Star with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, Merrifield entered the offseason seeking a multiyear deal and a starting role. The Phillies, interested in him throughout the winter, only signed him during spring training after his demands lowered. They anticipated he would adapt to a part-time role, having been a regular player throughout his career.
At 35, Merrifield failed to deliver. His 83 mph average exit velocity was the lowest among players with a similar number of hits. Over the last 33 days, he had just one extra-base hit, which was more a result of an outfielder misplay than his effort.
By releasing Merrifield now, the Phillies can better assess their bench before the July 30 trade deadline. They have called up Weston Wilson from Triple A to fill Merrifield’s spot. Wilson has been performing well in the minors, hitting .315/.446/.740 in 20 games. He was promptly placed in the lineup as the left fielder against the Oakland A’s left-hander Hogan Harris.
Despite being well-liked in the clubhouse, Merrifield’s lackluster performance didn’t warrant a place on a team with championship goals. There’s a good chance he will find a new opportunity with another team.
