A new literary initiative at the Fiji Museum is being hailed as a groundbreaking effort to enhance cultural pride and creative opportunities among Fijian communities. The program, titled *Poetry and Prose at the Fiji Museum*, showcases contributions from ten local writers affiliated with Poetry Shop Fiji. Each writer was inspired by a museum artifact to craft a unique poem or story, emphasizing the connection between Fijian heritage and contemporary expression.
The significance of this publication extends beyond showcasing artistic talent; it serves as a powerful vehicle for empowering ordinary Fijians. Charlotte Darlow, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, highlighted this community-centric approach, stating, “The importance of this project is that it is about Fijian poets and Fijian writers, giving them the chance to publish in the country. They don’t need to write for a foreign audience; they can write for themselves.” This focus on local narratives allows Fijians to see their experiences, values, and histories reflected in their literature, thus reinforcing cultural identity and encouraging broader participation in storytelling.
Artist Brittany Nawaqatabu, whose work *Threats Across the Sea* reflects her Chinese-Fijian heritage, noted the project’s ability to inspire individuals to delve into their roots and explore the shared narratives that shape Fiji’s identity. Lata Yaqona, the Fiji Museum’s Manager of Experience, remarked on how the initiative helps to demystify museum objects, stating, “People often think museum objects are anonymous, but they’ve been brought alive through the work showcased here tonight.” This effort aims to make cultural learning more accessible to families, students, and communities, rejuvenating museum artifacts and making them relevant for future generations.
Supported by the New Zealand High Commission, this initiative not only enriches Fiji’s cultural landscape but also creates opportunities for local artists to build confidence, develop portfolios, and pursue sustainable careers in writing and the creative arts.
