In Tavua, Fiji, cattle theft is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, with more than 70 incidents reported this year. Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga has expressed concerns for local farmers, who are facing growing threats from thieves targeting livestock, making this crime a persistent problem in the region.
While Tavua enjoys relatively low rates of drug-related crimes, livestock theft poses a significant challenge. Out of the 71 reported cases, only 20 cases have moved forward to court. Lutunauga has urged farmers to take proactive steps by properly tagging and monitoring their cattle, which would aid law enforcement in their investigations. The absence of identifiable branding on many cattle has impeded investigations, making it difficult to trace stolen animals back to their owners.
The situation is further complicated by the tendency of thieves to exploit communal events, such as funerals, when farmers may be less alert. There are also reports indicating that individuals are traveling from Suva to obtain stolen cattle, highlighting the broader implications of the problem.
Local residents are urging the government to enhance safety measures and to bolster support for the police force, which currently consists of only 83 officers and a limited fleet of seven operational vehicles. Despite these constraints, Lutunauga reassured locals of the police’s commitment to tackling these thefts and ensuring community safety.
The escalating trend of livestock theft in Tavua mirrors similar concerns in places like Labasa, where farmers have reportedly suffered substantial financial losses, amounting to nearly $10,000 due to theft incidents. With farming being a primary source of income for many families, the emotional and economic impact has been profound, underscoring the critical need for community vigilance.
As police efforts improve and community solidarity grows, there remains a hopeful outlook for enhanced safety and the restoration of secure environments for livestock farmers.
