The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has initiated a series of public awareness sessions across the nation to enhance understanding of the recent adjustments to electricity tariffs. This initiative serves as a platform for customers to seek clarification on the new changes and to evaluate the potential financial implications for their electricity bills.
Fatiaki Gibson, Chief Executive of Electric Fiji Limited (EFL), participated in one of the sessions held in Nadi. He highlighted the importance of EFL’s partnership with the FCCC in addressing public concerns. Gibson explained that these sessions enable EFL to deliver detailed technical insights into how the tariff revision will impact customer billing.
The cornerstone of the outreach program is aimed at domestic customers, seeking to demystify the recent tariff changes. Gibson assured attendees that the increase was approached with caution to safeguard vulnerable communities, including small and medium enterprises. He emphasized, “From EFL’s perspective, we’ve been very conscious about this tariff revision. We must look after vulnerable people and communities,” noting that the changes would minimally impact domestic users, particularly those with lower energy consumption.
However, some participants voiced doubts about the tariff increase. Residents and business owners in Nadi expressed concerns that the rise in tariffs might lead to elevated costs for goods and services, potentially placing additional burdens on consumers.
While the FCCC’s public awareness initiative concluded its current series of sessions today, there are plans to conduct further sessions from December 29th to 30th. These future gatherings will continue to provide opportunities for community engagement and education on the tariff changes. This initiative represents a commitment to transparency and consumer protection as Fiji adapts to changes within its energy sector.
Overall, this proactive approach by the FCCC and EFL aims to foster understanding and build trust among consumers as they navigate the complexities of the new electricity tariffs, ultimately empowering them to make informed decisions.
