Food businesses in Fiji’s Northern Division are under strict scrutiny as Divisional Health Inspector North, Vakaruru Cavuilati, has issued a serious warning about the necessity of adhering to food hygiene and safety standards. This warning follows a string of incidents in Labasa and its surrounding regions, leading to the temporary closure of various food outlets due to non-compliance.

Cavuilati highlighted the Ministry of Health’s authority to shut down establishments failing to meet food safety regulations. Recent inspections have uncovered significant lapses, particularly in small-scale vendors without proper kitchen facilities, such as those selling cooked meals at bus terminals, roadside stalls, and marketplaces. He noted that these shortcomings pose a considerable risk to public health.

In response to these challenges, Cavuilati urged food vendors, especially women’s groups within the industry, to engage in training sessions aimed at enhancing food safety practices. “Trainings on food hygiene practices are regularly conducted, and we strongly encourage all vendors to attend as these sessions are for their own benefit,” he expressed. This initiative will be supported by ongoing monitoring of food safety practices in Labasa, emphasizing the need for compliance.
