What sparked Hermosillo’s deadly Waldo’s fire? Officials probe.

A devastating fire at a discount shop in Hermosillo, Mexico, has tragically claimed the lives of at least 23 individuals, with another 11 suffering from injuries, according to local officials. The blaze ignited on Saturday at a branch of Waldo’s, Mexico’s largest discount chain, in the heart of the northwestern city.

Authorities have described the incident as an explosion, although Governor Alfonso Durazo stated that the specific cause remains under investigation. The Sonora state public security secretariat has confirmed that there is no indication of the fire being a result of an attack or deliberate violence against civilians.

Among the victims were children, with reports indicating that a 15-year-old girl was hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the fire. Eyewitness accounts and images from the scene depict thick, black smoke and flames that surged from the structure, subsequently spreading to vehicles parked outside.

Following the extinguishing of the fire, scorch marks were visible on the building’s doors and windows, with one window completely shattered and the car parked in front burnt to debris. Governor Durazo expressed his condolences in a video message, offering solidarity to the families affected by the tragedy. He announced that a comprehensive investigation is underway to ascertain the fire’s cause and identify any responsible parties.

Sonora state’s Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez indicated that many of the fatalities were due to “exposure to toxic gases.” While he reinforced that there is no evidence suggesting intentional ignition, he did not discard the possibility of further inquiry into the cause.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum extended her heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families via social media, emphasizing the emotional toll such tragic events take on communities. With Waldo’s shops being a staple in many Mexican towns, this event has struck a deep chord within the local population.

The fire coincides with the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, a time when families traditionally honor deceased loved ones. In light of this tragedy, the state government announced the cancellation of cultural events planned for Sunday, reflecting the somber mood enveloping Hermosillo during this period of mourning.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in commercial establishments. As investigations continue, it is hoped that lessons learned will foster enhanced safety protocols to prevent such devastating events in the future, ultimately protecting lives and communities across Mexico.
