The Westminster Mall, once a bustling shopping destination, has faced a dramatic decline since its closure in late October, resulting in over 400 calls to the Westminster Police Department involving trespassing, vandalism, and other illicit activities. With 54 arrests made on the mall premises, the situation has become increasingly concerning, especially during the last weekend when police reported 30 individuals were arrested for vandalizing the area.
According to police spokesperson Andy Stowers, the rise in vandalism coincides with the circulation of videos on social media, showcasing the mall’s deteriorating state, which in turn has attracted more individuals to the property. The footage highlights extensive damage, including graffiti-covered walls and shattered windows, with plans and soil strewn across the once vibrant interior.
Local resident Alexis Malatesta, who has fond memories of the mall, expressed her sadness over its deterioration, believing the damage was unavoidable. She reminisced about her youthful experiences at the mall and organized a karaoke event to celebrate its history before it closed. However, she now regards the location as a post-apocalyptic ruin filled with disrespectful acts.
After its closure, the Westminster Mall, originally opened in 1974, has struggled to maintain its former charm, prompting the police to collaborate with mall management on implementing enhanced security measures. As part of these efforts, workers have begun erecting fences around the premises. Despite the mall’s condition, some external businesses, including Target and Best Buy, remain open.
Four companies, including Kaiser Permanente and Shopoff Realty, oversee various sections of the mall and its surrounding parking areas. In 2022, the Westminster City Council approved a specific plan that could revitalize the property, envisioning a reimagined mixed-use downtown that could accommodate up to 3,000 housing units along with park space and retail facilities. As the mall’s future unfolds, Malatesta continues to monitor the site closely, reflecting on her deep connection to the once-thriving community hub.
While the current state of the mall is disheartening to many, there lies hope for rejuvenation as redevelopment plans advance, potentially transforming the site into a vibrant community center once again.
