Three major international airlines have made a significant investment of $550 million in WestJet, securing a combined 25% stake in Canada’s second-largest airline with an aim to deepen partnerships and enhance global connectivity. This strategic move was finalized on October 22, 2025.
Delta Air Lines now holds a 12.7% stake, having initially invested $330 million for a 15% share and later transferring 2.3% to Air France-KLM for $50 million. Korean Air has acquired a 10% stake with a $220 million investment, while Air France-KLM has obtained 2.3%. Onex Partners, a Canadian investment firm, continues to maintain majority control with a 75% ownership of WestJet.
The investments underscore existing partnerships between these airlines. Delta and Korean Air have collaborated with WestJet through codeshare agreements for over a decade, with Delta’s partnership dating back to February 2011 and Korean Air’s commencing in June 2012. Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, emphasized that this investment ensures alignment of interests and enhances the customer experience for travelers within the U.S. and Canada.
The collaboration amongst Delta, Korean Air, and Air France-KLM signals a strategic effort to bolster the SkyTeam alliance, particularly in the North American market, where competition is fierce due to Air Canada’s dominant position within the Star Alliance. Korean Air’s Chairman and CEO, Walter Cho, highlighted the importance of this partnership in improving transpacific connectivity and creating long-term value for customers through increased options and convenience.
Through this investment, WestJet is set to benefit from global expertise and resources while maintaining its independence. The acquisition aligns with WestJet’s goals, which include expanding its international operations, a recent achievement marked by its complete integration with Sunwing Airlines earlier in 2025. This partnership aims to enhance travel opportunities by leveraging each airline’s strengths and route networks across North America, Europe, and Asia, ultimately creating a more interconnected travel experience for passengers.
