Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Look to Ride Momentum Into North Alabama Clash

Hilltoppers aim to keep the momentum rolling as they prepare for North Alabama

Western Kentucky opened the season with a convincing 41-24 win over Sam Houston, and the mood around Houchens-Smith Stadium is one of cautious optimism. True freshman Marvis Parrish sparked the ground game and combined with Maverick McIvor’s productive debut at quarterback to showcase the Hilltoppers’ potential this season.

McIvor, a redshirt senior who transferred from Abilene Christian, starred in his WKU debut, throwing for 401 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score. He was protected well by a rebuilt offensive line, though he did absorb a couple of hits and was sacked twice. Parrish, also a newcomer, totaled more than 100 yards of offense, finishing with six receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown along with 52 rushing yards on 12 carries.

New starting kicker Jack Cassidy made a notable splash in his first football game ever, delivering every kickoff for touchbacks and earning high praise for his calm, steady presence. Head coach Tyson Helton highlighted both Parrish and Cassidy as bright signs from Week 0, noting that their performances added an easy confidence to the first game of the season.

“We’ve got some momentum from last week,” Helton said, while also stressing there’s plenty to clean up. WKU’s coach pointed to explosive plays surrendered on defense, a turnover that led to a Sam Houston score, and two penalties as areas to tighten up before the next game. Still, he said the overall improvements and the team’s pace in the second half were encouraging as the Tops pulled away with three unanswered touchdowns after trailing early in the third quarter.

Center Elijah Williams, who played behind four new starters on the line, emphasized the need to protect McIvor better and keep him from unnecessary hits, while also keeping him operational through his reads.

On defense, WKU’s coaches cited North Alabama’s potent offense as a test, particularly their run game. Defensive coordinator Davis Merritt noted that the Lions will lean on the ground attack, with senior Jayvian Allen expected to help carry the load and Ari Patu healthy again at quarterback after last year’s injury. North Alabama rushed for more than 100 yards in multiple games last season, including several efforts above 200 yards, underscoring the challenge WKU must meet on Saturday on ESPN+.

What to watch as WKU faces North Alabama
– Improved run defense will be tested by a Lions offense that emphasizes the run game.
– McIvor’s pocket poise and decision-making will be crucial against a tough-looking defense.
– The offensive line’s communication and protection adjustments after Week 1 will be key to sustaining the offense.
– Parry, Cassidy, and the receiving corps will be looking to replicate or exceed Week 0 production, expanding the offense’s options.

Summary and outlook
Western Kentucky’s season-opening performance showed a breakout showing from a young, talented group, led by McIvor’s veteran-like command and Parrish’s versatile skill set. The team has momentum, but there are clear areas to improve—namely, limiting explosive plays against big opponents, securing the football, and cleaning up penalties. If WKU can sharpen those aspects, the Tops have a solid path to building on their Week 0 success as they host North Alabama and push toward a strong early-season run.

Additional note
– The game against North Alabama will be televised on ESPN+, providing a national platform to showcase WKU’s developing offense and improved defense. A positive progression from Week 1, coupled with continued growth from the offensive line and the defensive front, could help WKU solidify its early-season trajectory.
