The West Point Warriors and Lady Warriors celebrated successful home openers against Hanceville at Jim Boyd Gymnasium on Tuesday night, with both teams emerging victorious in their contests.
The Lady Warriors demonstrated resilience after a slow start, rallying in the second half to secure a commanding 59-35 victory. After struggling to find their rhythm in the first half, the team outscored Hanceville 30-8 in the final two quarters. This game was also a milestone for Lady Warriors Head Coach John Welborn, who was celebrated for achieving his 200th win with the team during their previous game against Holly Pond. Following Tuesday’s triumph, his record stands at 201 wins to 104 losses.
In the boys’ matchup, Maddox Chapman stood out, scoring an impressive 33 points and leading the Warriors to a 73-47 victory over the Bulldogs. The game began closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads in the first quarter. However, West Point pulled away in the second quarter, ending the half with a 30-20 lead. Chapman continued to dominate in the third quarter, helping the team maintain their lead and ultimately secure a decisive win.
For the Lady Warriors, Camryn Faulkner was a standout performer, leading her team with 20 points, while Jaelyn Faulkner closely followed with 19 points. The Bulldogs’ Alex Twitty and Aaliyah Twitty contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Warriors’ momentum.
Looking forward, both teams are optimistic about their upcoming matches, with the West Point squads eager to build on their successful starts. West Point will host Fairview next, while Hanceville is set to face Oneonta on Thursday. As the season progresses, these victories could serve as a foundation for further achievements for both teams.
This strong showing from the West Point teams highlights not just their skill and determination, but also the vibrant spirit of local high school athletics, fostering community pride and excitement for future games.
