“West Nile Virus Surge Predicted: South Dakota on Alert for 2025”

The South Dakota Department of Health has issued a concerning forecast regarding West Nile Virus, predicting that the state may experience its most severe outbreak since 2018. According to a report released on July 17, officials anticipate approximately 137 cases in 2025, categorizing this as an outbreak situation.

Historically, the last time the number of cases reached such a high level was in 2018, when the state recorded a total of 169 cases. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the department’s announcement on July 16 regarding the first confirmed human case this season, identified in a resident from Brookings County. Furthermore, the virus has been detected in mosquito populations across several counties, including Brown, Brookings, Codington, Hughes, Lincoln, and Minnehaha.

In light of these developments, health officials urge residents to take precautionary measures such as using mosquito repellent, limiting outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours from dusk to midnight, and eliminating standing water in outdoor spaces to reduce the risk of transmission.

This proactive approach can significantly help in mitigating the impact of the virus, ensuring that communities remain safe and informed. With awareness and the right precautions, residents can work together to minimize the threat posed by this mosquito-borne illness.
