The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District has reported that the first group of mosquitoes this year in Contra Costa County has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This finding comes as temperatures rise, prompting expectations for increased West Nile virus activity in the upcoming weeks. Dr. Steve Schutz, the District’s Scientific Program Manager, emphasized the need for residents to take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites and the virus itself.

The District recommends the use of EPA-registered insect repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, the repellent version of Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or IR3535. It is crucial for residents to carefully follow the usage instructions on repellent labels and to report any dead birds, as they can indicate the presence of WNV in the area.

Additionally, residents are advised to regularly empty any standing water around their properties to minimize mosquito breeding sites. If they continue to experience mosquito problems after taking these steps, they should reach out to the District for assistance with mosquito control services.

For reporting dead birds, residents can call (877) WNV-BIRD (968-2473) or do so online, and for mosquito service requests, they can contact the District at (925) 685-9301 or through its website.

In light of the rising temperatures and the early detection of the virus, it’s a vital reminder for the community to stay vigilant and proactive, ensuring their health and safety as the mosquito season progresses.
