West Indies ODI Squad Shocker: Can They Thrive Without Hetmyer?

Shimron Hetmyer has been omitted from the West Indies’ one-day international squad for their upcoming series against England and Ireland this month. The left-handed batter, who is currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was a key player in West Indies’ 2-1 victory over England last year. However, he was absent during a subsequent series against Bangladesh due to illness, which led to 27-year-old Amir Jangoo stepping in and impressively scoring a debut century.

The West Indies will be facing Ireland in a three-match ODI series scheduled from May 21 to May 25, followed by three matches against England on May 29, June 1, and June 3. This series marks England’s first white-ball fixtures since the appointment of Harry Brook as the permanent white-ball captain.

Notable absences from the West Indies squad also include Nicholas Pooran, who has not participated in an ODI since 2023. The squad largely mirrors the one that achieved success against England, with Shai Hope captaining the team and a host of seam bowlers including Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Shamar Joseph.

Adding to the coaching staff, former Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien will assist Hope during the Ireland leg of the tour. Coach Darren Sammy highlighted the importance of these matches in the context of building toward the 2027 World Cup, emphasizing the team’s efforts to foster a consistent and positive cricketing culture. Sammy noted that despite expected challenges, the team is focused on developing a mindset that aligns with their long-term goals.

This squad restructuring and focus on player development reflect a hopeful path for West Indies cricket as they aim to regain their competitive edge on the international stage.
