West Branch Boys Basketball Breaks Streak with Dramatic Win

In a much-needed victory, the West Branch boys basketball team triumphed over Beaver Local with a close score of 58-55 on Tuesday, breaking a streak of six losses in their last seven games. Coach Scott Loudon expressed the significance of this win, especially after a previous victory over Salem followed by a loss to Louisville. “Getting back on the winning track as we have three league games in a row, we had to make sure we were doing something right,” he noted.

With this win, West Branch improved to a record of 5-8, while Beaver Local’s five-game winning streak was put to an end, dropping them to 8-3. The game was characterized by intense back-and-forth action, with West Branch ultimately seizing the lead in the final moments. Jeremiah Thomas made a crucial jumper with 41 seconds remaining, followed by Camden Lane making one out of two free throws to extend their lead to 56-54. Beaver Local attempted to equalize with free throws from Luke Rettos, but could only secure one point. In the end, Thomas sealed the win by hitting two free throws, allowing West Branch to emerge victorious.

Beaver Local’s coach, Nick Miller, acknowledged the difficulties of the loss but emphasized the learning experience for his young team, which features two seniors along with several sophomores and juniors. Miller stated, “Sometimes you have to lose a game like this to win a few more down the road.”

Owen Hill of Beaver Local made a strong impression on the court, scoring 22 points and establishing himself as a key player, while West Branch’s trio of post players, Cooper Anderson, Landon Coffee, and Zach Coffee, worked hard to challenge Hill’s performance.

Notably, West Branch played without 6-foot-7 junior Gavin Gregory, who has been sidelined due to a leg injury. Coach Loudon expressed optimism about Gregory’s return as they approach tournament season, indicating that he has a shooting percentage of over 70% and averages impressive statistics.

The game had an energetic start, with Beaver Local initially leading 12-4. However, as the match progressed, West Branch demonstrated resilience, eventually leading by four points heading into the fourth quarter. This turnaround was driven by Thomas and his fellow guards, who played pivotal roles in the comeback.

Turning attention to future matches, West Branch is set to face Minerva, while Beaver Local will host Oak Glen, presenting both teams with opportunities to build on their experiences.

Overall, this victory for West Branch not only serves as a confidence booster but also points to the potential for growth as they continue through the season.
