COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski was a standout player in another challenging game for his team, once again showcasing his talent by scoring two goals. Despite his efforts, the Blue Jackets suffered a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild at Nationwide Arena, in front of 14,845 fans.

Werenski’s frustration was evident in his candid remarks after the game. He expressed the collective sentiment that losing has become unacceptable, even as the players put in significant effort. “We’re playing well enough to win, but it’s getting old that we keep losing. I mean, enough is enough,” he stated, underscoring the team’s need to convert their performance into victories. Currently, the Blue Jackets have won only three of their last 13 games, leaving them at the bottom of both the Metro Division and the Eastern Conference.

The struggles of the third period have been particularly glaring, with the Blue Jackets outscored by 23 goals this season—the worst differential in the NHL. This trend has contributed to their recent slump, with the team dropping five of their last six games. “Guys just have to step up and give a little bit more,” Werenski said, emphasizing the need for increased effort during crunch time.

During the game, Werenski first found the net at 15:20 of the first period, executing a quick transition play with Charlie Coyle and Cole Sillinger. However, the Blue Jackets lost their momentum in the second period due to two critical mistakes that allowed the Wild to tie and then take the lead. A slashing penalty by Zach Aston-Reese led to a power-play goal by Ryan Hartman, and shortly after, a turnover by Damon Severson facilitated another goal by Vladimir Tarasenko.

Coach Dean Evason lamented the mistakes, recognizing that these errors undermine the team’s potential to secure points in winnable games. He pointed out that a lack of competitiveness in front of their net has allowed opponents to score too many “greasy” goals.

Despite these setbacks, Werenski identified the Wild’s composure and adherence to their game plan as reasons behind their successful play. “Good teams find ways to win and they don’t stray from the game plan,” he observed, noting that Minnesota executed simple, effective strategies that allowed them to maintain control in crucial moments.

The Blue Jackets hope to learn from their experiences as they reflect on their performance against a team in good form. While the path ahead may seem daunting, there remains a strong desire within the team to improve and turn their fortunes around in the coming games.
